History shouldn’t have a filter, but right now, it does.

At the Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation, we dedicate ourselves to preserving the radical legacy of a woman who fought tirelessly for the equal rights of women, stood hand-in-hand with Indigenous nations, and demanded the immediate abolition of slavery. Yet, because our mission directly centers on women's history, Black history, Indigenous history, and the lived experiences of those traditionally erased from the textbook narrative, we face a stark reality: restrictions and shifting political boundaries prevent us from qualifying for federal funding.

When the state restricts or filters the very history you are trying to protect, the public square must step in. That means YOU. We cannot rely on government grants to keep Matilda's house open, to fund our social justice dialogues, or to educate the next generation on the intersectional roots of American freedom. We rely entirely on you.
