Center for Active Adults
584 East Genesee Street
This home was built in 1878 in the Federal Style.
This 1978 article from the Eagle Bulletin explains the history:
After months of searching, the Ralph Ross house, 584 East Genesee St., has been chosen as the location for a Fayetteville Senior Citizen Recreation Center. The recommenedation to purchase the house for not more than $79,900, was made by the commission, and was accepted unanimously by the Viallge Board Monday evening. The commission met more than 24 times and studied more than a dozen potential sites. In addition, the group recommended the Board negotiate a first right of refusal for the half-acre of land including a barn and cottage adjoining the house.
The house, presently (1978) owned by Ralph Ross, was built 100 years ago for Hattie Louise Clark, who married William T. Avery. Miss Clark was the daughter of Ambrose Clark, a prosperous farmer, whose own large home with imposing pillars is just to the west.
The Center for Active Adilts is also the site of an original mural by Haudenosaunee artist, Brandon Lazore. This piece shows the two row wampum and the staples of indigenous foodways: corn, bean, and squash. The Three Sisters.
